The future of drones is not simply about flying further, faster or carrying more. It is about intelligence.
Knightingale Intelligent Drones is a British-led vision to develop the next generation of autonomous systems: drones designed around roles, intelligence and collaboration, rather than the traditional “push, send and control” approach.
A Knightingale drone is envisioned as an intelligent member of a wider network. It could sense its environment, understand information, share what it sees with other systems, collaborate, adapt its assigned role and support decisions in real time—all operating within defined parameters and appropriate human command and accountability.
From Individual Drones to Intelligent Swarms
The Knightingale programme aims to develop a common Swarm Intelligence Layer capable of connecting multiple autonomous systems.
SENSE → UNDERSTAND → SHARE → DECIDE → ADAPT → ACT
Instead of every drone depending continuously on a central controller, future Knightingale systems could distribute information and tasks across the swarm. If communications are degraded, satellite navigation becomes unavailable or one system is lost, other members of the network could adapt and continue permitted elements of the mission.
Potential roles range from surveillance and reconnaissance, search and rescue, infrastructure protection and logistics to maritime security, collaborative sensing and defence operations.
A Drone Is a Role — Not Just an Aircraft
Our approach starts with a different question.
Rather than asking “What drone should we build?”, we ask:
“What role does defence need the intelligent system to perform?”
The long-term ambition is therefore bigger than a single drone design. Knightingale intelligence could ultimately support different autonomous platforms across air, land, sea and subsea environments, creating a multi-domain family of intelligent systems.

Knightingale is being developed within the wider vision of Cockleshell Quantum AI Defence, providing a future pathway towards advanced AI, resilient communications, post-quantum security and emerging quantum-enabled capabilities.
At its heart is a Three-Tier Command and Control Structure:
Tier 1 – Human Command
Strategic leadership, accountability, legal authority and mission approval.
Tier 2 – AI Command & Intelligence
AI-supported situational awareness, information fusion, mission planning, coordination and decision support.
Tier 3 – Intelligent Autonomous Systems
Knightingale drones and future air, land, sea and subsea autonomous platforms carrying out authorised roles.
The objective is not to remove people from command. It is to enable a smaller human command structure to safely coordinate potentially very large numbers of increasingly intelligent autonomous systems.
